Background of the Study
Land disputes are a major source of conflict in Nigeria, often leading to violence, displacement, and economic instability. In Chikun Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State, competition over land ownership, boundary demarcations, and land-use rights has resulted in tensions between individuals, communities, and ethnic groups (Bako & Usman, 2023). These disputes arise due to factors such as population growth, urban expansion, agricultural activities, and weak land governance structures.
Local government councils play a crucial role in mediating and resolving these disputes by implementing land administration policies, conducting conflict resolution mechanisms, and enforcing land tenure laws. However, the effectiveness of these councils in resolving land disputes remains a subject of debate. Issues such as corruption, political interference, and limited resources often hinder the ability of local governments to provide fair and lasting solutions to land conflicts (Ibrahim & Musa, 2024).
Despite various government interventions, land disputes in Chikun LGA persist, affecting socio-economic development and community relations. This study aims to investigate the role of local government councils in resolving land disputes, assess their effectiveness, and identify challenges affecting their performance.
Statement of the Problem
Land disputes in Chikun LGA have led to prolonged legal battles, destruction of properties, and loss of lives. The inability of local government councils to effectively manage and resolve these disputes has worsened tensions among residents. The lack of clear land tenure systems, inconsistent policies, and bureaucratic inefficiencies have further complicated the resolution process (Adeyemi & Yusuf, 2024).
While local government councils are mandated to address land-related conflicts, their effectiveness is often undermined by inadequate funding, political influence, and lack of technical expertise in land administration. There is a need for an in-depth investigation into the role of local government councils in land dispute resolution, their challenges, and possible strategies for improving their effectiveness.
Objectives of the Study
To examine the role of local government councils in resolving land disputes in Chikun LGA.
To assess the effectiveness of dispute resolution mechanisms used by the local government.
To identify the challenges faced by local government councils in resolving land disputes and suggest possible solutions.
